297,068. Standard Oil Development Co., (formerly Standard Development Co.), and Arnold, C. May 9, 1927. Addition to 260,602. Lubricants for machinery.-Lubricants for internal combustion engines are obtained by adding to a hydrocarbon lubricating oil less than 0.5 per cent of an alkali, alkaline-earth, or other soap and heating to above 350‹ F. but not to boiling. The soap may be formed in the oil, as from oleic acid or corn oil and caustic soda, or may be added as a 1 per cent or more concentrated solution or gel of soap in oil, or as a 10 per cent or other solution in water. In an example a petroleum lubricating oil of 285‹ viscosity Saybolt at 100‹ F. is heated to 450‹ F. wich 1/8 per cent of sodium stearate or palmitate.
