Abstract

Channels and reservoirs in bearings and crossheads.-The bearing surfaces of bearings, crosshead shoes, or like machine parts are provided with a series of oil chambers 2, each of which extends at right-angles to the direction of movement of the moving part and is surrounded on all sides in the bearing surface, the side walls 5 of the chambers being shaped as shown in Fig. 3, so as to facilitate the formation of an oil film of uniform thickness between the bearing parts. Oil leaking towards the ends of the bearing is collected in annular grooves 9, Fig. 1. Oil is supplied to the various chambers through passages 7. Alternatively, oil may be supplied to one or more of the chambers only, the remaining chambers being supplied by the oil film or through grooves connecting the chambers. In a thrust block, the face of the horse-shoe collar may be tapered at its lower ends, which dip into an oil bath, whereby the chambers are supplied by the oil film created. In the thrust bearing shown in Fig. 12, wherein oil is supplied to the chambers 2 under pressure through passages 21, restricted lateral grooves 22<1>, 22<2> leading from each chamber are provided for the discharge of oil, whereby a continuous circulation of the oil may be obtained.
