Abstract
294,584. Hessling, W. July 27, 1927, [Convention date]. Hopper and plunger machines.-Carbon dioxide snow is compacted by a reciprocating pressure member 8 which continuously compresses the dioxide in a duct 9 open at each end, but having a restriction adapted to increase the density of the snow. The snow is formed by the expansion of liquid supplied through the pipe 1 into a chamber 3, and falls in front of the plunger on the back stroke. The duct is of Venturi shape. A further compression may be given to the solid by apparatus shown in Fig. 2, in which solid formed by the plunger 14 is disintegrated by toothed rollers 18, 19 in a low pressure chamber 17 and fed to a second plunger 23. The duct for this plunger is in two parts adjusted by a set screw 27. The outlet may have several small apertures, Fig. 3, enabling rods of ice to be formed.
