Abstract

264,309. Hamp, R. May 14, 1926. Hopper and plunger machines; feeding. - Apparatus for making artificial fuel comprises a hopper and a compressing chamber 2 into which successive charges of material are fed by a reciprocating ram 5 and the walls of the compressing chamber are provided with holes 26, Fig. 3, covered by a hood 27, which is connected with suction means to induce the passage of material into each chamber. The ram 5 reciprocates through the trough 3, provided beneath the hopper 4. Fig. 1, and is actuated by a connecting rod 9 from a countershaft 10. Material is caused to pass from the hopper to the trough 3 by means of a pair of driven rollers 20 arranged on opposite sides of the path of movement of the ram. The rollers 20 may be driven by worm gearing 21 from a shaft 22, mounted in a bearing 6 and driven by pulleys 23, 24 and a belt 25 from the crankshaft 10. The chamber 2 is provided with an extension in the form of a duct 13, the bore of which is constricted. A curved spring 14 is fitted in the duct, being pivotally supported by a pin 17, wheel rests in notches in the upper edges of the duct and is held down by screws 15, 18 in straps 16. 19 as shown in Fig. 1. Two or more compressing chambers and rams may be provided.
