Moulding fuel; endlesschain machines; shaking and jigging machines.- Pulverulent fuel material mixed with binder is fed on to an endless band conveyer and during transportation thereon is subjected to a combined jarring and compressing action. The material, which may have been introduced to a mixer Q whilst still hot from a retort, is fed through crushing rollers into a feed box R<1> provided at its forward end with a slide r' by adjusting which the thickness of the briquette may be varied. Trough or tray sections B of a conveyer A after being filled pass under pressure rollers H - - H<2>, then under an endless band J applying an increasing pressure from rollers I - - I<3> and finally under a finishing roller L. Vibration is simultaneously imparted to the underside of the conveyer by hammers M preferably positioned directly beneath the pressure rollers. The finished briquettes are conveyed to the discharging point, being retained within the tray sections by a curved plate N, and are there ejected on to the conveyer P by means of a pivoted lever o intermittently actuated by a tappet rod o<3>, to cause loose bottoms b<2>, Fig. 2, of the tray sections to turn about their pivots b<3>. A reciprocating knife may be employed at the discharge point to divide the consolidated material if transverse division plates are not used. The vibrators may be steam-driven, exhaust steam being used to melt and inject atomized binder into a steam-heated mixer. The conveyer may be intermittently driven and reciprocating plungers employed with or without pressure rollers and an endless pressure band. The conveyer may be constructed to make several rows of briquettes.
