Abstract

604,944. Preparing fibres for spinning. NETTLEFOLD, F. J. (Carver, G. W.). Oct. 3, 1945, No. 25690. [Class 120(i)] A machine for the treatment of waste material resulting from the decortication of fibrous leaves of plants, particularly sisal, embodies a squeezing portion comprising upper and lower squeezing rollers 1, 2, a preliminary squeezing roller 8 parallel to and next to roller 1, and a feed roller 12, under roller 8 and next to roller 2, rotated at a greater speed than the other rollers so that material fed down between rollers 1 and 8 on to roller 12 is flicked or thrown thereby to the main squeezing rollers 1, 2. As shown, waste material, after preliminary squeezing between rollers 1, 8 and final squeezing between rollers 1, 2, is delivered down a chute 18 into shaking tray 17. Tray 17 has a grid bottom formed of longitudinal and transverse rods and is suspended from rotating eccentrics 23, 24 by fixed and pivoted brackets 26, 27. By varying the adjustment of the eccentrics, the shaking motion of tray 17 can be controlled so that the material moves from the inlet to the delivery end thereof. Rod-like members 29 are adjustably secured at 30 to cranked rods 28 pivoted in bearings 31 and are given an oscillatory motion by means of rotating crank disc 35 and links 37, 32. The various moving parts may be driven by chain or gear drives from a main driving pulley 42. The motion of tray 17 combined with the action of rods 29 separates the short fibres from the pulp and carries the fibres along the tray to the outlet for collection, whilst the separated pulp passes through the grid bottom of the tray and may be removed by an endless band conveyer. An endless conveyer may also be provided for delivering the material between roller 8 and roller 1. Roller 2 has a smooth surface. and the other rollers are preferably formed with longitudinal grooves. '
