Clockwork - actuated v a l v e s; actuating- mechanism. - In gas cocks, electric switches, &c. operating by semi-rotary movements the operative rotary member is actuated by the lateral and reciprocal movements of two sliding members b<8>, b', which are mounted at right angles to the axis of the rotary member and are slotted at b<12> and b<13> to engage crank pins or projections b<4>, b<5> thereon, the sliding members being actuated by the tappets a<2>, a<3> &c. of a clockwork or other like mechanism. The rotary member (e.g. cock plug) and the two sliding members are combined in one unit B, the operative ends of the sliding members being inclined and projecting through closely fitting slots in a curved plate b<10>, which fits, insect-tight, the side of the clockwork &c. casing. The opposite ends b<14>, b<15>, of the slides also project through to the exterior for hand operation in emergency. The device may be arranged for operation by an electric motor. As applied for operating an electric switch the slides g<1>, g<2>, Fig. 19, operate under the control of a tumbler spring arrangement g<4>, g<6> whereby the slide g<1> is projected quickly forwards and closes the switch contacts g<9>, g<10>. At the same time a gravity lever g<11> drops behind the armature block g<8> and locks the switch. For opening the switch the slide g<2> operates on the tail g<12> of the gravity locking lever g<11> and releases the spring armature which then resumes the open position as shown. The arrangements described are applicable for use as gas controllers, time switches, and automatic flashing signs.
