Carriage brakes.- A device for retarding the carriage during tabulating on return movement consists of a quick-pitched worm meshing with a toothed wheel geared to the carriage. The device shown in Figs. 2 and 5 comprises a quick-pitched worm 23 meshing with a toothed wheel 22 on a shaft 20 provided with a bevel gear 19 engaging a loose bevel gear 18 on the shaft 5 of the escapement wheel 3. A sleeve 9 splined on the shaft carries a pawl 4 which normally engages a ratchet-wheel 10 and couples the escapement wheel, the sleeve engaging a forked arm 13 on a vertically movable pillar 11 forming a part of the tabulating-mechanism described in Specification 293,553. On operating the tabulating-key, the sleeve is raised and releases the carnage, and a pawl 16 on the sleeve engages a ratchet-wheel 17 on the gear 18 and couples the carriage to the retarding-device. When the carriage is arrested, the ratchet-wheel 17 runs over the pawl 16. The worm may be provided with detachable vanes 37 or weights, such as nuts and washers, for increasing the resistance, adjustment being effected by bending the vanes or altering the weights. The device is mounted on a bracket 21 which is adjustably attached, by means of screws 28 passing through slots 27, to posts 34 on the frame 29 of the escapement mechanism. The bracket is formed with bearing lugs 25, 26 for the worm, and is provided with a detachable yoke 31 which supports the outer end of the shaft 20 a.nd has a lug 32 provided with an abutment 35 for the worm.
