Abstract

315,379. Schwanke, E. July 13, 1928, [Convention date]. Returning sound-box to starting point. - Repeating mechanism for gramophones consists of a running- wheel g which is geared to a member adapted positively to raise and to lower the tone-arm at the required positions, and the wheel is arranged at such an angle in relation to the tangent to the record groove at the point at which the wheel contacts with the record that it carries the tone-arm towards the outer periphery of the record. A pinion 6, Fig. 1, which is fixed on the axis of the wheel g, is rotatably mounted in a member slidable in a guiding member 23 fixed to a part 7 carried by a clip d on the tone-arm a. A non-circular toothed wheel 1 rotatably mounted in the member 23 is adapted to engage the pinion 6, but is provided with a toothless gap 8 wherein the pinion runs idly during playing of the record. The initial rotation of the wheel 1 is effected by a weight 2 fixed upon the spindle of the toothed wheel 1, and normally held in raised position by an arm 3, Fig. 6. The arm 3 co-operates with a feeler device 4 so that when the latter contacts with a fixed stop, such as the turntable spindle f, the weight 2 is caused to fall, the pinion 6 and wheel 1 to engage, and the tone-arm to be raised. The feeler device is previously set in position according to the desired point of operation of the repeating mechanism. The shape of the wheel 1 is such as to raise the tone-arm rapidly and lower it gradually. The running-wheel g may be held out of contact with the record during playing by means, such as a spring, and released so as to engage the record at the same time as the weight 2 is released by the device 4. The arm 3 is adapted to re-engage, for example by spring action, with the weight 2 to maintain the device in inoperative position until it reaches the inner limit of adjustment determined by the feeler device. In an alternative construction, the wheel 1 may be mounted on an arm pivoted to an L- shaped part on the part 7, or the running wheel g, toothed wheel 1, and a cam 9 may be mounted in a cranked lever 24 pivoted to a part 11 which carries, as shown in Fig. 3, a roller 10 engaging the cam 9. If desired, the roller 10 may be mounted on a separate lever pivoted to the lever 11 and may be adjustable vertically by a setscrew or weight. The running wheel g may be adjusted in vertical direction by mounting the part 7 in a sleeve 19 and actuating a screw 30, Fig. 10. Angular adjustment of the wheel g is effected by a knob 27 which rotates a worm 18 engaged by an extending arm on th'e sleeve 19. Alternatively, the device may be adjustable longitudinally of the tone-arm, in which case the running-wheel g and parts 11, 24 are movable in a guide 29, Fig. 11, by a screw 28. A pointer moving over a scale may be provided in connection with the adjustment means. The guide 29 may be of sinuous shape.
