Abstract

314,203. Gramophone Co., Ltd., and Clark, G. F. June 12, 1928. Returning sound-box to starting point; brakes, arrangement of.-A repeating device for use in playing a gramophone record comprises two pivoted levers 36, 37, one 36 of which serves to raise and lower the reproducer while the other 37 serves to impart the outward swinging movement to the reproducer and is provided with an adjustable point of pivotation so as to permit the throw of the lever and the distance moved outwardly by the reproducer to be varied. Both levers move in a horizontal plane and the lever 36 has an inclined surface 41 adapted to raise a pin 44 which engages with an arm 42, Fig. 5, carried by the sound arm 13. The pin 44 engages beneath the arm 42 and moves vertically within a sleeve 45 carried by an arm 46 rigid with the sound-arm. The lower end of the pin 44 rests upon the inclined surface 41 and serves to connect the sound-arm 13 and the spring-connected parts 12, 12<1> of a pivoted lever 12. The levers 36, 37 are adapted to be rocked in forward direction by a cam 35, which is mounted on a gear wheel 28. The gear wheel 28 is rotated by a gear wheel 27, and a gap 29 in the teeth of the wheel 28 rests opposite the teeth of the wheel 27 when the machine is playing so that the wheel 28 is not then driven. A toothed segment 30 mounted on the axis of the gear wheel 28 is adapted when not in engagement with a lever 17 to move under the action of a spring 31 to complete the toothed periphery of the gear 28, which latter then rotates for one complete revolution when the lever 17 again engages the segment 30. The lever 36 is adapted to be moved rearwardly after completing its forward movement by a spring 39, and the lever 37 in its forward movement engages the pin 44. The extent of the forward throw of the lever 37, which is determined by the size of the record, is variable by moving the position of its pivot 38 by means of a lever 47 connected with a hand-lever 23. A toothed segment 10 is mounted upon the lever 17 and is adapted to be engaged by a pawl 11 carried by the lever 12 when the needle is given a reverse movement at the completion of a record so as to rock a detent 8 and cause the brake 3 to function. The same movement of the lever 17 causes it to be released from engagement with the segment 30. The brake mechanism is of the type described in Specification 286,755 except that the toothed segment 10 is not rigidly connected with the detent 8 which holds the brake in the " off " position, and means are provided to couple the detent 8 and lever 17 together when the automatic brake is required to operate, such means consisting of a pin 20 carried by a lever 21 operable by a hand-lever 23 and adapted to be inserted in slots 18, 19 in the lever 17 and plate 19 on the detent 8, respectively. As the sound-arm reaches its outermost position, the lever 12 contacts with the slidably-mounted pivot pin 60 of a link 54 so as to tension a spring 56 connected between the link 54 and hand-lever 23 whereby the sound-arm is afterwards moved gently inwards to feed the stylus into the commencing groove of the records The pivot 38 of the lever 37 also carries a hooked lever 49 having a slot 51 co-operating with a guide pin 52 on the baseplate, and this lever is connected with the handlever 23 so that when the latter is moved to stop the apparatus automatically, the end of the lever 49 lies in the path of the segment 30 so as to prevent operation of the repetition mechanism.
