To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, EDWARD A. Ilsonina citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Talking-Machines, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to sound recording and reproducing machines, including gramophones and graphophones; and particularly feed mechanism for'sound boxes of such machines adjustable to automatically repeat their cooperation with a given sound record, at the will of the operator.
As hereinafter described, my invention is specifically adapted for such machines arranged to cooperate with flat disk records, and having sound conducting tubular arms or horns which move with the sound boxes, and are so constructed and arranged repetitionof the coiiperation of the sound box with any given record is consequent upon such movement, to an adjustably pre' determined extent. I
I find it convenient to illustrate and describe my invention herein in connection with a graphophone of the type known commercially as The New Edison Diamond Am berola, having positive feeding means to shift the tone arm across the record,
also in connection with a gramophone oft-he type known commercially as a Victor talk-, ing machine, wherein the stylus shifts the tone arm across the record by coaction with the record groove. However, it is to be understood that I do not desire to limit myself to such specific embodiments of my invention, which includes the various novel features of construction and arrangementhereinafter more definitely specified.
It may be observed that although the two embodiments of my invention chosen for illustration herein are-specifically difierent in their details of construction; they each include means to variably predetermine the initial and terminal positions of the respective sound boxes with reference to given sound records, in combination with a single rotary cam constructed and arranged to automatically lift the sound box from coopei'ative relation with therecord when it Specification of Letters Patent.

However, as said mechanism is complicated and is not of the essence of my invention, I have omitted illustration thereof.
As it isthe purpose of my invention to shift said sound box from its terminal position upon. any record to its proper initial position with respect to such record; it is important to note that there is considerable variation in the radial position of the initial and terminal portions of sound record grooves in records of the same nominal size, and, therefore, I provide stop mechanism which is adjustably' variable to predetermine the initial and terminal positions of the sound box with reference to any given record.
The adjustable initial stop lever 13, indicated in Fig. ,I, is arranged to limit the initial position of said box 5 in coiiperation with said record 9 at the outer limit of its movement with respect to the axis of said table 2, by the curved stop bar 14 which is connected with said lever 13 by the rod 15; said stop bar having the padded inner face 16 to encounter the vertically extending portion of the horn 10 as indicated in Fig. I. Said initial stop lever 13 is connected by the rod 18 with the index 19 which is slidable back and forth in the stationary track bar 20 which is rigidly connected with the instrument casing 1 as indicated in Fig. Said track bar has at the bottom thereof the rack 21 with which the pivoted pawl 22 of said index may be detachably engaged in The spring 23 prevents accidental displacement of said pawl, but it is to be understood that when the latter is manually raised, by compression of said spring 23, said index may be shifted with reference to the graduated member 24.which is stationary on said casing 1 as shown in Fig. I, so as to predetermine the osition of said initial stop member 14 in accordance with the greatest radial extent of the record groove in said record 9.

Said stop arm is a gear rack mounted to slide transversely in the hood 27 on said lever 25 in engagement with the gear 29 which is rigidly connected with the lower end of the vertical shaft 30, shown in Fig. II, which has its lower end j ournaled in said lever 25 which is fulcrumed at 31 upon the base plate 32 rigidly conin said casing 1. Said shaft is journaled at its upper end in the bracket 35 which is secured upon said table plate 4 as indicated in Figs. I and II.
Said shaft 30 has rigidly connected with its upper end the milled head 36 carryin the index 38 which is thus rotatable with reference to the circularly graduated member 40 of said bracket 35. It is to be understood that the construction and arrangement of said terminal stop mechanism is such that it may be precisely adjusted in accordance with the radial position of the termination of the sound groove in any record capable of cooperation with the graphophone mechanism above contemplated; so that when the horn 10 reaches its terminal position with reference to such record, it shall have, encountered the arm 26 of the lever 25 and shifted the latter to a predetermined extent suilicient to terminate the coiiperation of said sound box 5 with that record, by the mechanism connected with said lever 25, as follows:
The automatic feed mechanism which is 10, tone arm 6 and the box 5 from their terminal position, shift said box away from the axis of said table 2 and lower them to their initial position, includes the cam 42, shown in Figs. II, III and IV, which is revoluble on a horizontal axis, being carried by the shaft 43 which is journaled in the motor frame 45 and bracket 46 shown in said figures. Said cam 42 is arranged'to .frictionally engage the under' surface of the cam plate 48, which is rigidly connected with said shaft 12 in the position shown in Figs. II and III. However, said cam 42 normally remains stationary, in the position shown in Figs. II, III and IV, during thecoperation of the sound box with the record; that is to say, while the sound box is traversing the record, from its initial to its terminal position with respect thereto; said cam plate 48 merely slides upon the flat portion of said cam 42 motor, in the direction of then presented prevented from operating by the detent I cam as indiengaging the notch 51 in said cated in Fig. IV. Said detent 50 is rigidly connected with the rod 55 which is mounted to slide in said bracket 46, and is prevented from turning by the pin 56 projecting from said detent 50 and also mounted to slide in said bracket. Said rod 55 is pivotally connected with said terminal stop lever 25, as
shown in Figs. II and III and said detent is v normally held in the engaged position shown, by the spring 58 which connects said lever 25 with the stationary stud 59 on said shelf 33. It is to be understood that when said horn 1O encounters the adjustable arm 26 of said lever 25, it turns the latter in the direction of the arrow marked thereon in Fig. III, against the tension,of said spring 58, to a sufiicient extent to disengage said detent 50' from the notch 51 in said cam 42; thus permitting said cam to be turned by its the arrow marke thereon in Fig. IV, with the effect that said horn .10, arm 6 and sound box 5 are u lifted from cooperative relation with t e record and then turned by frictional engagement of said cam 42 with said cam p late 48, on said shaft 12, until said tone arm 6 encounters the pad 16 on said stop bar 14 of the initial stop mechanism. Further turningmovement of said cam 42 merely lowers said horn, arm and box 5 to their initial position in cooperative relation with the .-.mentum of the escapement train of record; said detent 50 being snapped into engagement with the notch 51 in said cam 42 to stop the latter,'in the position shown in Fig. IV, by the action of said spring 58.
However, as the action of said spring 58 above described is to instantly stop the rotation of said cam 42 and the motor connected therewith; in order to check the mosaid I motor in "the casing 45 I prefer to provide the frictional brake mechanism including the pad (if leather or felt 61, indicated in Figs. II, III and IV, adanteddco frictionally engage the pinion 62 of the motor mechanism'when pressed against the latter by the lever 65 which is fulcrumed on the stud'66 of the motor frame 45 and provided at its opposite end with the spring 67. It may be observed, with reference to Fig. II, that said rod 55, extendsthrough' the bracket 46 in enga ement with the end of said lever 65, so that when said rodds shifted to disengage said detent 50 from" the cam 42 to permit the latter to rotate as above described, said friction brake mechanism is table2 until the stylus also released to permit the operationof the escapement train in the motor casing 45, and it is tobe understood that said spring 67' may be of such strength as to render the aforesaid, spring 58 unnecessary.
- The form. of my invention above described, operates as follows:
Any desired sound record, such as 9, being placed upon the turn table 2: the tone arm 6, and the horn 10 connected therewith, are turned until the stylus 7 registers with the initial end of the sound record groove indicated at 70 in Fig. I. There-upon, the
initial stop mechanism, including the stop lever 13 and ratchet pawl 22 shown in Figs. I and V. is adjusted to bring the stop bar 14 into the position shown in Fig. I, corresponding with the predetermined position of the sound box 5. Said sound box 5 is then shifted toward the axis of the turn 7 registers with the terminal convolution 71 of the sound groove in said record, and the terminal stop mechanism then adjusted, by rotation of the milled head 36, until the detent 51 is released from the cam 42. Thereupon, said sound box 5 is automatically returned to its initial position, by the operation of the feed mechanism above contemplated. Thereupon, said turn table being released for operation by the motor 3, by movement of the ordinary releasing lever 73, shown in Fig. I, said record may be repeatedly played until the mechanism is stopped by the operator; only a'few seconds intermission being required for the automatic return of the sound box 5 from its terminal to its initial position as above contemplated.
Referring to the form of my invention shown in Figs. VI to XI inclusive; 81 is a casing inclosing a gramophone including the record turn table 82 arranged to be turned by the motor 83 which is only indicated in dotted lines in Fig. VII but is mounted upon the underside of the casing top 84 which is detachably rigidly secured on said casing 81. The sound box 85, which is carried by the tubular tone arm 86, includes a vibratory diaphragm and carries a stylus 87, indicated in Fig. VII, arranged to traverse a groove in a record 89 on said turn table 82 and automatically shift said box toward the axis of said table. The amplifying horn" 90 is rigidly connected with said casing 81. but is pivotally connected with said tone arm 86 at 91.
The collar 92, Which is detachably se; cured upon said horn 90 by the set screw 93, carries the adjustableinitial stop lever 94 which is arranged to be manually secured in adjusted position by the set screw 95 shown in Fig. VIII. Said lever 94 rests upon the flange 96 of said collar 92 which is conveniently graduated as indicated at 98 in Fig. VIII so as to be traversed by the I index lug 99 on said lever 94; whereby the position of said lever may be accurately determined so as to limit the initial position of said box 85in cooperation with said record 89 at the outer limit of its movement with respect to the axis of said table 82.
As said sound box 85 is carried across said record 89 in cooperative relation therewith and toward the axis of said table 82, said tone arm 86 is swung in the direction of the arrow indicated in Fig. VI; its terminal position being indicated by the dash lines in that figure corresponding with the terminal position of'said sound box 85 with reference to said record 89, and the adjustable terminal stop lever 102 is arranged to variably limit the terminal position of said box 85 by variation in the extent of the stop arm 103 of said lever 102 which, as indicated in Figs. VIII to X inclusive, is a screw having a milled head 104 which serves as an index in its movement with respect to the graduated arm 105 on said lever 102.
- Said lever 102 is split to receive said stop arm 103 which it resiliently engages to prevent accidental displacement thereof. Said lever 102 is fulcrumed upon the screw 107 in the bracket 108 which is rigidly connected with the base plate 109 as indicated in Fig. VIII. The arm 110 of said lever 102 extends through the slotted end of the detent lever 111 as indicated in Fig. IX, so that when said sound box is carried to its terminal position said detent lever will be operated to release the spring lever 112 which it normally detains in the position shown in Figs. VIII and IX, and thereby initiate the operation of the automatic feed mechanism in connection with the gear 114 which is continuously turned during the operation of said gramophone by the means indicated in dotted lines in Fig. VII, including the shaft 115 which carries said gear 114 and is journaled in the bracket 1'16 rigidly connected with said casing top ,84. Said shaft 115 carries at its lower end the bevel gear 118 engaging the bevel gear 119 on the shaft 120 of the motor 83. Said spring lever 112 is fulcrumed on the screw 123 engaging said base plate 109 and is connected by the spring 124 with the clutch shifting lever 125 which is fulcrumed on the screw 109. As indicated 126 engaging said plate in Fig. VIII; said spring 124 is under longitudinal tension and transverse flexion between said levers 1'12 and-125 and the construction and arrangement is such that when said detent lever 11-1 releases said spring lever 112; said levers 112 and 125 are respectively snapped in the directions indicated by the arrows marked thereon in Fig. VIII (by the longitudinal collapse and horizontal flexure of said spring 124, which tendsto straighten itself; supplemented by the con-' sequent momentum of said lever 112 to arm 138 on the lever thrust the bevel gear 128 into engagement with said bevel gear 114 being turned by the motor 83. Said gear 128 is rigidly connected. with and carried by the cam sleeve 130 which is mounted to slide upon the stationary stud shaft 131 which is rigidly connected with said collar 92 as indicated in Figs. VIII and IX. However, in the normal idle position shown in Figs. VIII to XI inclusive, said sleeveis prevented from turning on 'said shaft 131 by the stud 133, which is stationary upon said plate- 109, and then engages the notch 134 in the flange 135 of said sleeve as best shown in Fig. XI. Said sleeve 130 carries the cam 137, shown in Fig. X, which registers with the arcual 139 shown in Figs. VI and VII which is fulcrumed on the screw 140 rigidly connected with said tone arm 86, and engaged with the lever 142 carried by the goose neck 143; which latter supports said sound box 85 and is fulcrumed upon a horizontal axis in the cross tube 144 of said tone arm- 86, so that when said gear 128 is thrust into engagement with said car 114, as above described, said cam 137 o the automatic feed mechanism, by frictional engagement with said lever arm 138, returns said tone arm 86 to its initial position indicated in VI, and, while said tone arm is held in its initial position, predetermined by the aforesaid adjustment of the stop lever 94, said lever 139, being released .by said cam 137 .is returned to its normal position shown in Figs. VI and VII, by the weight of the sound box 85, which is thus restored to operative position with respect to the sound record 89.
ile said cam 137 is being turned, as above described, by engagement of the sleeve gear 128 with said motor gear 114, as above described, the cam 146, which is like a screw thread on said sleeve 130, bears upon the stud 147 projecting upwardly from said spring lever 112 so as to reset said spring lever 112 in engagement with the detent lever 111, the latter being constantly pressed toward the position shown in Fig. IX by its-spring 149 which is secured upon said plate 109. Such movement places the spring 124 under tension, which tends to shift the clutch lever 125 in the direction opposite to that in which it was moved as above described; however, such movement is prevented by the unnotched portion of the sleeve flange 135 bearing upon the stationary stud 133, until the notch 134 in said flange registers. with said stud 133; whereupon, said spring 124 snaps said lever 125 and the sleeve 130 and gear 128 into the inoperative position shown in Fig. VIII; such disengagelimited by stud 147 of the spring Fig; IX, to engage naeaaeo cated. in Figs. VI and VII, as above described, the automatic feeding movement described having been efiected in a few seconds by asingle revolution of said sleeve 130.
Of course, in the position shown in the drawing, in which said gear 128. is withdrawn from engagement with said gear 114, said cam 146 is out of engagement with said lever 112, as shown, for instance, in Fig.- However, when said sleeve is shifted,.towardthe right in said gear 128 with said gear 114; such movement presses the cam 146 in position to contact with said stud 147 when the latter is inthe position shown in Fig. IX; such movement of said sleeve being the collar shown upon the right hand end of the stud shaft 131 in said figure. It may be observed that although the two embodiments of my invention above described are difi'erent in many respects; they are alike in that they not only each include means to variably predeterminethe initial and terminal positions of therespective sound boxes with reference to given sound records, in combination with a single rotary cam constructed and arranged to automatically lift the sound box from cooperative relation with any record -when it reaches a variably predeterminal terminal position and to then return the box to its initial position and again lower it into cooperative relation with that record; but, an essential element of each of said embodiments of my invention is a bell crank lever having an arm of manually variable extent; 2'. 6., the lever 25 having the arm 26, and the lever 102 having the arm 103.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise details of construction and arrangement of my invention herein set forth as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features thereof as defined in the appended claims,
I claim:
1. In automatic feed mechanism for talking machine sound boxes; the combination with mechanism arranged to turn a soun record; of a sound box means carried by said box arranged to traverse such a recordin cooperative relation therewith; a sound amplifying horn movable with said box; an initial stop lever, limiting the initial position of said box at the outer limit of its movement with respect to the record, by contact with said movable born; a terminal stop lever, limiting the terminal position of said box at the-inner limit of its movement with respect to the record, by contact with said movable horn; mechanism arranged to return said box from its terminal position, to its initial position,

In automatic fee mechanism for talkin machine sound boxes; with mechanism arranged to turn a soun record; of a sound box; means carried by said box arranged totraverse such a recor in cooperative relation therewith; a sound amplifying horn movable with said box; an initial stop, limiting the initial position of said box at the outer limit of its movement with respect to the record, by contact with said movable horn; a terminal stop, l1m1t ing inner limit of its movement with respectto the record; by contact with said movable horn; mechanism arranged to return said box from its terminal position, to its initial position, horizontal axis; drivin mechanism for said cam, including an auxi iary motor; a spring pressed brake for said driving mechanism; and means operatively connecting said brake and terminal stop, whereby movement of the 120 latter, caused by movement of said box 'toward its terminal position, releases sai brake and permits said drivingmechanism to operate to return said box to its initial position. 4. 5. ln automatic feed mechanism for talking machine sound boxes; the combination with mechanism arranged to turn a sound record; of a sound box; means carried by said box arranged to traverse such a record in coiiperative relation therewith; an. initial stop lever, limiting the initial position of said box; a terminal stop lever, limiting the terminal position of said box; mechanism arranged to return said box from its terminal position, to its initial position, includin a cam revoluble On a horizontal axis; driving mechanism for said cam, including an auxiliary motor; means including a spring urged detent, normally preventing rotation of said cam by said drivin mechanism; and means operatively connecting said detent and terminal stop lever, whereby movement of the latter, caused by-movement of said box toward its terminal osition, releases said detent and permits said driving mechanism tozoplerate to return said box to its initial position.
6. In automatic feed mechanism for talking machine sound boxes; the combination with mechanism arranged to turn a sound record; of a sound box; means carried by said box arranged to traverse such a record in cooperative relation therewith; an initial stop, limiting the initial position of said box; a terminal stop, limiting the terminal position of said box; mechanism arranged to return said box from its terminal position, to its initial position, including a cam revoluble on a horizontal axis; driving mechanism for said cam, including an auxiliary motor; means includin urged detent, normally preventlng rotation of said cam by said driving mechanism; and means operatively connecting said detent and terminal stop,

In automatic feed mechanism for talking machine sound boxes; the combination with a sound box; of mechanism arranged to return said box from its terminal position to its initial position, including a cam; driving mechanism for said cam a detent; and means whereby movement of said box toward its terminal position, releases said detent and permits said driving mechanism to operate to return said box to its initial position,'ineluding a lever having an adjustable stop arm, and means whereby the efiective length of said arm may be varied, including gear teeth on said arm, and a gear engaged therewith. v
8. in automatic feed mechanism for talking machine sound boxes; the combination with a sound box; of mechanism arranged to return said box from its terminal position to its initial position, including a cam; driving mechanism for said cam; a detent; and means whereby movement of said box toward its terminal position, releases said detent and permits said driving mechanism to operate to return said box to its initial position, including a lever having an adjustable stop arm, and means whereby the effective length of said arm may be Varied.
9. ln automatic feed mechanism for talking machine sound boxes; the combination .With a terminal stop lever, limiting the terminal position of said box; of means arranged to return said box from its terminal position to its initial position, includin a cam revoluble On a horizontal axis; driving mechanism for said cam, including an auxiliarv motor; a spring pressed brake for said driving mechanlsm, normally preventing its operation; and means operatively connecting said brake and terminal stop lever, whereby movement of the latter, caused by movement of said box toward its terminal position, releases said brake and permits said driving mechanism to operate to return said box to its initial position.

In automatic feed mechanismfor talking machine sound boxes; the combination with a terminal stop lever, limiting the terminal position of said box; of means arrangedto return said box from its terminal position to its initial osition, includin a cam revoluble on a horlzontal axis; driving mechanismfor said cam; a spring pressed brake for said driving mechanism, normally preventing its operation and means operatively connecting said brake and terminal stop lever, whereby movement of the latter, caused by movement of said box toward its terminal "position, releases said brake and permits said driving mechanism to operate to return said box to its initial position.

In automatic feed mechanism for talking machine sound boxes; the combination -with mechanism arranged to turn a sound record; of a sound box; means carried by said box arranged to traverse such a record in cooperative relation therewith; mechanism arranged to return said box from its terminal position, to its initial position, ,including a cam; driving mechanism for said cam; a detent for said cam; and means whereby movement of said box toward its terminal position, releases said detent and permits said driving mechanism to operate a return said box to its initial position.
13. In a talking machine, the combination with means to turn a sound record; ofa sound box having means to cooperatively traverse such a record; feed mechanism constructed and arranged to return said sound box from its terminal position to its initial position; stop mechanism, adjustable to Variably predetermin the terminal position of said box, in accordance with variations in the extent of such records, including a bell crank having one of its arms of variable length, and means arranged to vary the length of said arm.

15. In automatic feed mechanism'for talking machine sound boxes; the combination with mechanism arranged to turn a sound record; of a sound box; means carried by said box arranged to traverse such a record in cooperative relation therewith; mechanism arranged to return said box from its terminal position, to its initialtposition, including a cam plate carried with said box, and a single rotary cam, revoluble on a hori zontal axis, arranged to frictionally engage said cam plate and thereby automatically lift' the sound box from cooperative relation with the record, return said sound box to its initial position, and again lower it into cooperative relation with the record, by frictiona'l engagement of said cam with said plate, the movement of said cam being sufficien't to shift said sound box throughout the maximum range ofmovement of said box; and means limiting the effect of said cam upon said box, whereby said box may be held stationary while said cam continues to move, in frictional engagement with said plate, without moving the latter.
16. In automatic feed mechanism for talking machine sound boxes; the combination with mechanism arranged to turn a sound record; of a sound box; means carrie said box arranged to traverse such a recor in cooperative relation therewith; mecha-- nism arranged to return said box from its terminal position, cludinga cam plate carried with said box, and a single rotary cam, ar'anged to frictionally engage said cam plate and thereby automatically lift the sound box from cooperative relation with the record, return said sound box to its initial position, and again lower it into cooperative relation with the record, by frictional engagement of said cam with said plate, the movement of said cam being sufficient to throughout the maximum range of movement of said box; and means limiting the effect of said cam upon said box, whereby said box may be held stationary while said cam continues to move, in frictional engagement with said plate, without moving the latter.
17 In sound reproducing mechanism, the combination with means to turn a sound record; of a sound box having means to cooperatively traverse such; a record; feed mechanism constructed and arranged to return said sound box tion'to its initial position, including a driving member constructed and arranged to shift said sound box solely by frictional gagement with a contact member movable with said box; the movement of said driving member being sufficient to shift said sound box throughout the maximum range of movement of said box; and means limiting the effect of said driving member upon said box, whereby said box may be held stationary while said driving member continues to move, in frictional engagement with said contact member, without moving the latter.
