Abstract

293,095. Williams, W. A. March 28, 1927. Latex, treating.-Rubber is deposited electrolytically from a latex to which is added a salt of the metal employed as anode or an aqueous solution thereof, the amount of salt being insufficient to effect coagulation. The voltage should be insufficient to electroyse water, e.g. 1.5 volts. In an example, an ammoniacal latex having an alkalinity equivalent to a semi-normal solution of ammonia and a rubber content not exceeding 30 per cent is employed, to which zinc sulphate not exceeding 2 per cent is added. Both electrodes are of zinc. Zinc is deposited at the cathode and rubber at the anode. The current is reversed after each complete deposition. The latex may be employed in a vulcanized or unvulcanized condition. Substances such as zinc oxide and sulphur which do not produce premature coagulation may be added to the latex and are deposited with the rubber.
