Abstract

299,738. Williams, W. A. June 30, 1927. Indiarubber, guttapercha, and balata, preparation of. - Rubber or an homologous substance is deposited by inserting a pair of electrodes of different material into a latex which contains an electroylte such as ammonium chloride which does not readily cause coagulation and which will not evolve any substance. deleterious to the latex or the deposit, but which will enter into chemical reaction with the anode and act as an excitant of electric current; an external source of current is applied to the electrodes of voltage insufficient to decompose the added electrolyte and such that the total difference of potential between the electrodes shall not be sufficient to effect electrolysis of water. The anode may be of zinc and the cathode of carbon provided with a depolarizer. 20 parts by weight of ammonium chloride, may be added to 100 parts of latex. The external source may be such as to produce a potential difference of 1.5 volt per cell. The cells may be connected in series or parallel or in series-parallel. Chemicals and fillers for incorporation in the deposit and vulcanizing agents and accelerators may be added to the latex. A vulcanized latex may be used. Specification 257,885 is referred to.
