Stays.-Windows pivoted about the lower edge are held in the closed and open positions by a latch member 20 on the upper window edge engaging a slotted arm 3 fixed to the window frame, the latch having a finger 22 for engagement with a shoulder 36 at the inner end of the slot and for supporting the latch in the forward or closed Position. When the window is opened a projection 26 on the latch rides over a shoulder 5' on the underside of the arm 3 and the window is then held in the partly open position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The metal arm 3 secured to a plate 1 is slotted as shown in Fig. 3, and carries a depending pivot ally -mounted transverse member 32 which serves to prevent the release of the latch from the arm 3 except when the window is in the closed position and the latch member is first operated in a particular manner. The parts are assembled when the window is moved into the closed position, the upper part of the latch riding on the underside of the arm 3 and its forward part 25 pushing the stirrup 32 towards the window frame; the weighted end 21 then raises the forward end of the latch through the opening 9 in the arm 3. A lateral member 22 on the latch prevents the release of the latch from the arm 3 unless the latch is first pulled downwardly when the window is in an open position. The window is then moved to the closed position with the member 22 on the arm 3 until the shoulder 36 of the slots 8, 9 allows the forward end of the latch to press against the stirrup and to push it aside in order that the latch projection 22 may be moved freely down through the slot 9 without engaging the stirrup 32. To prevent the latch being disengaged unintentionally by the operator, a spring 34 is provided, which requires the sash to be pushed against the spring into the fully-closed position before the release of the latch can be effected.
