Abstract
292,133. Soc. of Chemical Industry in Basle. June 14, 1927, [Convention date]. Sterols, particularly those present in fungi such as ergosterol, are obtained by heating the material, e.g. yeast, under pressure with an aqueous solution of an alkaline substance such as hydroxide or carbonate. As an example yeast is mixed with a strong hot solution of potassium hydroxide and then heated to 120‹ C. in an autoclave for several hours. The sterols separate largely on the surface of the. liquid and are skimmed, the skimmed material being extracted with ether and the extracts washed with water, dried with sodium sulphate and evaporated to crystallize out the sterol. The alkaline liquid resulting from the hydrolysis also contains a proportion of sterol which may be obtained therefrom by extracting with ether.
