Abstract

299,060. Soc. of Chemical Industry in Basle. Oct, 20, 1927, [Convention date]. Medicines for internal use.-Water-soluble and lipoid-soluble hormones are obtained separately from sexual glands by hydrolysing the glands by means of chemicals or ferments, extracting the product with a water-insoluble solvent, separating the solution of the lipoid-soluble hormone so obtained, and recovering the water-soluble hormone from the aqueous fraction, or its dry residue, in the usual manner. According to an example, bull testicles are hydrolysed with 20 per cent sulphuric acid and the product extracted with ether. 'The aqueous residue is neutralized with milk of lime, filtered, and evaporated to dryness in a vacuum. The. water-soluble hormone forming the residue may be purified by a re-solution in water and precipitation by a lead or mercury salt or phosphotungstic acid, or by extraction with alcohol. The etheral extract may be evaporated to dryness and further purified by extraction with alkali, or bv the process described in Specifications 113,311 and 226,372. According to a second example ovaries are ground with dilute sodium carbonate solution, subjected to tryptic digestion, and the resultant liquid extracted with ether, neutralized with sulphuric acid and evaporated to dryness. The two products are purified as in the previous example. According to a third example minced ovaries are heated with alcoholic potash, concentrated, diluted with and extracted with ether. The aqueous residue is worked up as before and the ethereal solution is washed successively with water, dilute acid, and water, and is dried and evaporated. The residue may be used directly or further purified.
