Abstract
161,341. Thomson, D. Jan. 23, 1920. Vaccines.-Non-toxic vaccines are prepared from germs by separating the alkali-, acid-, and alcohol-soluble portions by successive precipitations. Tubercle bacilli, gonococci, or Pfeiffer bacilli are treated with an alkaline solution and the solid residue removed. The solution is treated with acid, and the resulting precipitate is neutralized and then treated with alcohol to form a precipitate A. The acid solution is treated with alcohol to yield a precipitate B. The residue of the germ substance not soluble in alkali is treated with acid, and the solution obtained is rendered alkaline to give a precipitate C, and then treated with alcohol to give a precipitate D. The residue of germ substance not dissolved by the alkali or bv the acid is treated with alcohol to give a solution from which a precipitate E is obtained by the addition of salt solution, and the final residue of germ substance is treated with chloroform to obtain an extract which is evaporated to dryness and washed with alcohol to yield a residue F. The substances A, C, E, and F, with or without Band D, are emulsified with normal saline solution and standardized for use as vaccines. Specification 136,036 is referred to.
