Abstract

272,376. Agopian, L. A. Oct. 25, 1926. Vitamins.-To obtain concentrated forms of vitamin C, vegetable juice, after initial treatment with metal salts such as acetate of lead and copper, as described in Specification 168,903, is given a further treatment, as follows : The filtrate is neutralized with soda until it turns red with cresol red. The precipitate which is formed contains lead and glucosides &c. associated with the vitamin, and by the use of 5 per cent acetic acid the vitamin with a little impurity is brought into solution. Repetition of the treatment with soda and with acetic acid serves to effect further purification and then after elimination of any lead by sulphuretted hydrogen the filtrate is concentrated in vacuo, mixed with milk of lime and ethyl alcohol to remove organic acids &c., and the final filtrate is concentrated to dryness in vacuo. The powder can be dissolved in glycerine and put into capsules. Purer preparations of the vitamin mav be obtained by subjecting the powder to repeated extractions with absolute ethyl alcohol and then to filtrations after admixture with water.
