Abstract

Solutions containing impurities are purified by adding a mixture of the oxide and hydroxide of magnesium, removing the resulting precipitate, and then adjusting the pH substantially to neutrality. The mixture of oxide and hydroxide is made by calcining the hydroxide for about 30 minutes at 400 DEG C., so that the oxide contains 1-35 per cent, preferably about 2 per cent, of hydroxide. A fresh batch of the mixture should be prepared for each operation. From 0.25 to 6 per cent of the mixture based on the amount of substance to be retained in solution is added in order to raise the pH to 9-10. The liquid is then heated to 70-90 DEG C. and the precipitate removed by decanting and filtering. A solution of a substance to reduce the pH to 5-7.3 and to precipitate impurities, e.g. a 10 per cent phosphoric acid solution is then added and the liquid is heated to 80-90 DEG C. and finally filtered. Specification 501,754, [Group VI], is referred to.ALSO:Sugar juices and other sugar containing liquors are purified by adding a mixture of the oxide and hydroxide of magnesium removing the resulting precipitate, and then adjusting the pH substantially to neutrality.
