Abstract

291,885. Royce, F. H. March 11, 1927. Charge indicators.-An apparatus for use on a motor vehicle to indicate when the accumulator is fully charged comprises a vessel connected by a pipe to the battery and containing liquid through which the escaping gas bubbles, means being provided to prevent the liquid from being sucked back into the accumulator if a fall of pressure occurs. Fig. 1 shows one form of the apparatus comprising two tanks a, b connected by a pipe e, the tank a being also open to the atmosphere through a pipe d. A pipe c connected to the accumulator terminates near the top of the tank b. Liquid f is placed in both tanks, the total quantity being insufficient to fill either tank. When the accumulator is fully charged the escaping gas forces the liquid from tank b into tank a and then escapes through the pipe e and bubbles through the liquid in tank a. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which only one tank is used, suction of the liquid into the accumulator being prevented by a small orifice o in the pipe c. The orifice o is connected by a pipe i<l> to the outlet i. Fig. 3 shows a further modification in which the escaping gas passes through liquid in a U-tube l, the quantity of liquid being insufficient to fill either limb of the tube. Specification 1677/10 is referred to.
