Abstract

288,381. Dicker, S. G. S., (Stromberg Motor Devices Co.). Jan. 12, 1927. Indicators actuated by pressure of head of liquid. -Liquid level or quantity in a container, the contents of which are withdrawn by suction, is indicated by measuring the pressure at a point in the suction pipe. The liquid fuel tank 1 of a motor vehicle is connected to the vacuum tank 3 by a pipe 6 and U- tube 25 which opens into an air chamber 12 having a depending pipe 13 dipping into the liquid. The suction in the tank 3 maintains the liquid level in the chamber 12 at the top of the U-tube 25. The pressure in the chamber 12 is measured by a gauge 10 and indicates the difference of level between the liquid in the tank 1 and the chamber 12. When suction ceases in the tank 3, the liquid returns through the pipe 6 but the tube 25 prevents the entrance of air to the chamber 12. In a modification, Fig. 2, the chamber 12 is provided at the top of a wide pipe 27 constituting a reserve, and the U-tube is constituted by a pipe 20 and by the pipe 6, both of which open into a chamber 28 having a small orifice 29. When liquid has been drawn off down to the bottom of the pipe 27, further suction allows air to pass into it and into the chamber 12 while liquid is drawn off through the orifice 29, and the indicator moves towards the full position.
