Treatment of material to facilitate subsequent drying.-The cake of thread formed in the box spinning process for the manufacture of artificial threads and filaments can be dried, after washing, sulphiding or bleaching, if it is deformed so that it is no longer annular in shape, with the result that all parts of the thread in the cake, whether on the inside or outside thereof, are accorded free opportunity to contract on drying without being subjected to undue tension. The cake is deformed preferably in a special apparatus. In the first type of apparatus, Fig. 1, a set of movable rods D engage the outer periphery of the cake A. whilst the inner periphery may or may not be held by a set of vertical immovable rods B. The movable rods D, which are arranged intermediate of and between the fixed rods B, are caused to move along grooves in the base plate C towards the axis of the cake by forcing down the slidable ring G encircling the rods. The cake is thus pressed at four points. more or less equidistant along the periphery, until the pressedin portions of the cake are each about one inch from the central axis. The rods are then removed and the cake transferred to the drying oven. The outside yarn of the cake is free to contract and during drying, the indentations formed in the cake become less pronounced. In the second type of apparatus, Fig. 4, the cake A is deformed by the movement of the inner rods B<1> outwards and the outer rods D<1> inwards caused by movement of the slidable ring G.
