Abstract
<PICT:0358151/IV/1> In carrying out the process described in the parent Specification for the wet treatment of artificial silk, for example washing, desulphurizing, bleaching, soaping, sizing, or dyeing, the cakes are mounted separately on carriers provided with flanges forming part thereof on which the cakes rest and so constructed that the cakes are capable of upward extension on them, and that they engage with one another to form a stack or column. As in the parent case, the carriers may be so arranged as to limit the extension of the cakes by their coming into contact with the lower surface of the flange of the next carrier above. An apparatus shown comprises a cylindrical perforated and fluted body portion a having a flange b at the lower end thereof, which latter is adapted to hold a disc c having a central opening smaller in diameter than that of the body portion a. An upper cylindrical extension a2 of reduced diameter fits into the opening in the disc c of another carrier in order to enable the carriers to be arranged in column form. The body portion a of each carrier is of such a height that there is initially a clearance space between the top of any cake d and the bottom of the next carrier above, as shown in the upper part of the Figure, so that the cakes may expand upwards under the influence of the treating liquid.
