289,918. Cowper, E. O. Jan. 28, 1927. Block paving; foundations. -A resilient paving for roads, floors, and the like, is formed by placing on the road &c. foundation a a layer b of rubber or rubber composition which is covered by two or more alternate or graduated layers c, d, e, of hard and soft rubber, the latter layers being laid either in continuous or block form. A layer of harder material such as terra-cotta, iron, concrete, or vulcanite may be inserted between the hard and soft rubber layers. As shown in Fig. 4, the harder layer d may have recesses c<1> to receive plugs of soft rubber bearing on the resilient layer b, or the recesses may be left empty to provide a suction grip. Where block units are superposed on the layer b, as in Fig. 1, the units may be invertible and formed of rubber graded in diminishing hardness from a hard central portion. The lower surface of the units may be grooved, fluted, or crÛped to assist in draining water to the side of the road, or the foundation may be grooved for this purpose. The units may be shaped to interlock, as described in Specification 267,832, [Class 87 (i), Bricks &c.]. Specification 225,897 also is referred to.
