Abstract

Exciting.-A continuous-current dynamo-electric machine, particularly for use in electric arc welding, has shunt and series excitation, the coils of the shunt winding being arranged in the normal manner so that alternate poles have opposite polarity whereas the series winding assists the shunt winding on some of the poles and opposes it on the other poles, and the effects of the compounding and counter-compounding coils are caused to differ. As shown, the series coils 7, 8 assist the shunt coils 3, 4 and the series coils 5, 6 oppose the shunt coils 1, 2. The object of the invention is to limit the shortcircuited current and to obtain a substantially constant current over a given voltage range. In order that a short-circuit current may be generated, the series coils 7, 8 have a greater number of turns than the other series coils, Alternatively, the brushes may be rocked, the air gap under the poles III, IV may be made smaller than the air gap under the poles I, II, or the counter-compound winding may be shunted.
