Abstract
288,789. Steeds, W. March 5, 1927. Suspending on mounted bodies.-In a threepoint suspension for component parts of aircraft, ships and vehicles, each joint or point of suspension destroys a number of degrees of freedom, not exceeding three, of the suspended body and the sum of the number of degrees destroyed by each joint separately amounts to six. The numbers destroyed by the joint may be three, two and one, or two each. The suspension may be applied to the mounting of engines, gear-boxes, electric units, bodywork or sub-frames. As shown, the joint 1 is a ball-joint destroying the three translational degrees of freedom of the body a, the joint 2 is a ball-joint having a translational movement along the rod 3, Figs. 1 and 3, and the joint 4 comprises a bell-ended link 6 which destroys only the vertical translational movement. Three joints such as 2 may be used, two of the rods 3 being co-linear and perpendicular to the third. Other arrangements of three joints such as 2 are also described.
