Cylinders, pipes for.- In order to obtain uniform working of the engine under varying atmospheric pressures, for example at different altitudes, a constant counterpressure to the exhaust is maintained by connecting the exhaust pipes a to a chamber b having a larger capacity than the total volumes of the cylinders, and by connecting this chamber by a restricted pipe or neck c to a second chamber d fitted with a spring- closed valve f.
