Abstract

288,537. Barnum, T. E. April 11, 1927, [Convention date]. Automatic starters.-A starter of the kind used in conjunction with a compensator or autotransformer for starting an alternating current motor consists of two electromagnetically actuated switches mutually controlling each other's action. When the first switch is closed to connect the motor to the supply through reduced voltage taps it sets in motion a retarded relay which after a certain time energizes the electromagnet for closing the full-voltage switch. After this switch has made part of its closing movement it brings about the opening of the first switch and thus removes a mechanical interlock, allowing the closing movement of the full-voltage switch to be completed.
