Automatic starters. - In motor-starters of the sequentially-acting electromagnetic contactor type, the current limit and time-limit intervals between successive contactors are controlled by one or more automatic relays 5, 6, 7 permanently biassed to their operative positions and each having a winding 11 connected to the motor circuit and a short-circuited winding 13 mounted on a separate limb of the magnetic core and inductively related to the winding 11. During the period of rising current immediately after closing a main switch 1, the induced effect in the shortcircuited winding increases the force with which the core holds up a contact-carrying armature 9 and thus virtually adds a time-limit delay to the winding 11. The fall of the armature brings the winding of the next contactor into circuit, and the action is repeated to the end of the sequence. In a modification, a single time and current limit relay controls all the contactors of a group.
