Master control, electromagnetic.-In an electric motor-starting system, electromagnetic contactors have their coils a' - - d<1> connected in series across the motor armature h, those coils which are to act successively in response to back e.m.f. being initially short-circuited by switches c<2>, d<2>. Each contactor, in closing, opens the switch short-circuiting the coil of the next contactor in order. A supplementary resistance may be added in order to prevent the motor armature from being short-circuited when the line contactor is opened.
