[Class 38 (iii)] Regenerative braking; field control.-In a system of control according to the parent Specification, the series field winding c is diverted by a number of shunting resistances 6, 7, connected successively during motoring across the field by the action of a control drum 3 and disconnected successively by the control drum during regeneration, certain of the resistances being controlled both for motoring and regenerative operation by electromagnetic means p responsive to the armature current, so that when the current exceeds a predetermined value one or more of the shunting resistances are disconnected independently of the position of the control drum. The coil p in the armature circuit controls the resistances 7 by means of switches 8. A polarized relay a<1>, j, may cause closure of a switch n when regenerative current flows, and thereby connect a resistance g across the series field c, and the coil p may operate to open contacts g when the regenerated current attains a predetermined value and insert resistance 10 in series with the resistance g. Alternatively, the contacts g operated by the coil p may disconnect the resistance g.
