Abstract

191,638. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Feb. 15, 1922. Electromagnetic switches are arranged with controlling switches which short circuit the operating coil so as to avoid sparking w h e n the controlling switch re-opens. In one arrangement, coils 16, 17 respectively acting to close and open a switch 11 connected to a motor 21 are energized alternately by a thermal switch 18. The closure of the switch 11 short-circuits the coil 16, the switch being retained set by a spring 14. The opening of the switch leaves the coil 17 in a closed short circuit round the motor 21. In a modified arrangement, the switch 11 is connected as a relay to set a main switch in action. In further modifications the arrangement is adapted to three-phase circuits and is provided with auxiliary switches which open the short circuits immediately after they have been formed.
