Abstract
172,440. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Sept. 21, 1920. Sparking, preventing.-Two or more electromagnetic switches in series are employed to connect electric apparatus to a supply circuit, arrangements being made whereby the switches must be closed successively in a determined order and the closure of the last switch breaks the operating-circuit of the remainder. The object is to ensure that one switch shall remain in a working condition even if excessive sparking and fusing together of the contacts should take place at another switch of the series. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a supply circuit 12 is connected to motors 10, 11 by means of two electromagnetically operated switches 13, 14 disposed in series and controlled by a subsidiary switch 15, a two-way push-button 16, and interlocking contacts 20, in such a manner that the switch 13 closes before the switch 14. In a modified arrangement the interlocking contacts 2 are replaced by a shunt resistance in the control circuit, which serves the same purpose. In either arrangement, after the switch 13 has been opened, as by the action of overload relays 17, 18, 19, it cannot be reclosed until the switch 14 has been opened also.
