502,498. Control of motors. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and BUTLER, F. E. Sept. 20, 1937, No. 25509. [Class 38 (iii)] Safety arrangements.-A motor 1 is connected to its supply by closure of a circuit-breaker 2, and starting resistance 3 is cut out by contactors 4, the holding coil 13 of the circuit-breaker being energized by closure of contacts of a relay 7. The relay 7 is closed by energization of a coil 8, and held closed by a coil 5 in series with the motor, the circuit-breaker in closing opening contacts 10 to de-energize the coil 8. The energization of the coil 13 is effected initially through contacts 12 closed when the contactors 4 are open, and maintained, after the contacts 12 have opened in response to closure of contactors 4, by maintaining contacts 14. Thus, if the supply fails the coil 5 releases the relay 7, the coil 13 is de-energized and the circuit-breaker opened. The contacts 10 reclose and when the supply is restored the relay 7 is reclosed and, provided contactors 4 are opened and the resistance 3 reinserted, so that contacts 12 are reclosed, the coil 13 is de-energized to reconnect the motor to the supply. The relay 7 may have a dashpot, and the circuit of the coil 13 may include contacts operated by an overload coil 6.
