Abstract
1,031,782. Magnetic switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 9, 1964 [Jan. 16, 1963], No. 2018/63. Heading H2B. The object of the invention is to reduce the operating differential of a magnetic switch actuated by the movement of a flux diverting member. As shown, a sealed magnetic contact unit 3 is normally closed by a permanent magnet 4 and is opened by the insertion of a flux diverting member 5 between the unit 3 and permanent magnet 4. Opening of the contacts de-energizes a relay 9 with normally closed contacts 8 so that a coil 6 surrounding the unit is energized through a variable resistor 7 to a level just insufficient to reclose the contact unit 3. The coil 6 acts in the same sense as permanent magnet 4 so that the unit 3 is reclosed after the member 5 has been removed a shorter distance than would otherwise be necessary. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the permanent magnet is replaced by an electromagnet whose operating winding is in series with a variable resistor shunted by normally closed contacts of a delay 9. On insertion of member 5 the contact unit opens, de-energizing the relay 9 and causing its contacts to close short-circuiting the variable resistance and thereby increasing the current through the electromagnet. The contact unit therefore recloses in a shorter withdrawal distance.
