Abstract

539,343. Electromagnetic switches. COATES, W. A., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. June 17, 1940, No. 10489. [Class 38 (v)], Relates to electromagnetic switches or circuitbreakers wherein the closing coil 1 of the circuitbreaker is fully energized by momentary operation of a switch 5, 6 and has inserted in series with it a first economy resistance 2 when switch 5, 6 is opened and a second economy resistance 3 when the circuit-breaker 1 is closed or nearly closed. An overload switch 12 is also arranged to short-circuit, the coil 1 on overload. According to the invention to prevent continual opening and closing of the circuit-breaker should an overload exist at the same time as the contacts 5, 6 are held in engagement, a control coil 13, energized when the contacts 5, 6 are closed prevents short-circuiting of the second economy resistance after the circuit-breaker has once been closed, so that should the circuit-breaker open owing to an overload, the current tending to reclose it will have to pass through the resistance 3 and will not be strong enough to effect closure. The coil 13 by itself is not strong enough to operate the switch in the arrangement shown but holds it operated. In a modification, the coil 13 acts with delayed action on an auxiliary switch short-circuiting the resistance 3.
