Closure members, tapered plug lift.-In a gate valve, a wedgeshaped carrier 12 with usual operating means 29 and guided in a casing 1 by vertical ribs 9, cooperates with opposed ports 4, 4a having inclined sealing faces 10, 11. In the recessed, inclined face of the carrier opposite the inlet port 4, a sealing ring S of asbestos laminae precompacted and vulcanized, or of other yielding material, is seated and retained by a bevelled centre plate 38 secured by a screw stud 39. The face 33 of the sealing ring projects from the carrier and is bounded externally and internally by bevelled edges 34 providing support therefor. The area of the inclined sealing surface 11 is in excess of that of the sealing ring face to prevent disintegration of the material by overlapping between the edges, allowance for wear and compression of the material being made in the direction of movement.
