Abstract

288,372. Freeborn, J. E. Jan. 8, 1927. Variable-speed friction gearing comprises a flexible member f which makes contact on its opposite surfaces with driving and driven wheels or drums a, e, Figs. 1 and 2, and is adapted to be deflected to conform more or less to the surfaces of either wheel to vary the speed transmitted. The band passes over jockeys g which can be moved from a control wheel n. When the band f is flexed over the driving-wheel a it forms part of a driving friction element with increased radius, so that the drum e is driven at maximum speed. When the band is flexed over the driven wheel surface, the speed is minimum. Intermediate contours of the band yield intermediate graduallyvariable speeds. In a form adapted for bevelgearing shown in Fig. 6, the flexible member F is a disc which turns loosely and is flexed over either bevel gear A or E.
