Stockings and socks. -To make an article with the heel pocket shown in Fig. 2, the blank is fashioned, in a continuous operation, as follows : Knitting is discontinued on the main body of needles between the points a<1> to b<1>, but the loops are not pressed off. Knitting continues on the needles between the points a to a<1> and b<1> to b, but periodically extra needles are taken into knitting at the selvedges while a corresponding number of needles are taken out of knitting starting from the points a<1> and b' and working outwards without, however, any needles losing their loops. The corner e, c' and f, b are made by a combined widening and narrcwing operation. From the points c to d onwards the foot is knitted, the loops between the points c<1> to c and d to d' having been first pressed off.
