Omamenting.-A process for ornamenting the surface of wood, metal, paper, cardboard, pottery, glass, fancy shoe leather, textiles, rubber, or plaster, or articles made of rattan or straw, comprises the application to a surface already provided with a coloured design consisting, for instance, of a coloured glue solution, of a layer of crackling enamel, varnish, or lacquer, in which, on drying, fissures are formed, whereby parts of the design are exposed, and, together with the grains of the enamel, provide an ornamental appearance. The design may be applied by dyeing, printing, or painting, or the process may be used for producing a new ornamental design on surfaces already bearing a design. The surface may, first of all, be coloured uniformly, a layer of colourless transparent varnish may be interposed between the design and the enamel, and a final protective coating of varnish may be applied.
