Abstract

378,744. Ornamenting metal surfaces. VEREINIGTE GRABA-UND SCHREGERWERKE, Meissen, Saxony. Dec. 10, 1931, No. 34311. Convention date, Dec. 11, 1930. [Class 93.] An imitation of mat etching is produced on metal boxes or other articles by coating the surfaces with a varnish ground according to a design, and, before the varnish is dry, dusting it with starch or like powder, e.g. potato starch, in quite small quantities not completely covering the treated surface, and then covering the surface with a colourless lacquer. The mat effect is produced by the grains of starch which, under the influence of the lacquer, become translucent and contrast with the parts of the material showing between the grains. The metal may be gilded or printed before applying the varnish, and the design may be associated with coloured printing to provide an imitation of tula work combined with mat etching.
