285,116. Smith, J. E. H., and Rowntree & Co., Ltd. Nov. 5, 1926. Opening by tearing. - Relates to boxes for sweetmeats &c. of the type formed by folding a single blank to form an open box without gluing or gumming, which is ready for packing, and further of the kind in which the lid has side flaps which are glued to the ends of the carton and a front flap which is secured to the front of the carton while the lid is provided with suitable perforations for tearing open. According to the invention, the erected carton is held in place during packing by interlocking the sides 3, 3<1> and the side flaps 7 are glued or gummed thereover after the filling operation. The front flap 5 is then pressed into a slit 6 and the lid 4 has lines of perforations 8 for tearing open. A wrapper having weakened lines for opening may enclose the carton and is secured by gluing &c.
