' Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in display boxes, and consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The object of the invention is to produce a display box of simple and economical construction, capable of manufacture from a single blank of cardboard or heavy paper, and which when opened up for display purposes will present the articles contained therein onan upwardly and rearwardly inclined inner bottom, with a card for advertising purposes extending above the rear end of the box.
The objects and advantages of the invention will appear more fully as I proceed with my specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank of cardboard or heavy paper out and scored in manner to form the improved display box.
Figure 2 is a perspective View of the box as it appears in, display position.
Figure 3 is a View representing a vertical central section through the box in the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Figure 2, V
Figure 4 is a perspective View of the blank shown in Figure l, with the parts as they appear when the required manipulation to fold the blank to box form has been started.
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing the blank at a further stage of the process of folding it to box form.
Figure 6 is a transverse section through the box in a plane indicated by the line 66 of Figure 3.
Referring now to that embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings: 50 indicates the box-forming blank which is cut and scored as shown in Figure 1; ii indicates the bottom wall; 62 indicates the front Wall, and i3 indicates the rear wall. Said parts are laid out'on the blank end to end and defined endwise by transverse score lines I2 lt The blank includes side members M, M which are scored and cut alike. l5, indicate longitudinal score lines which divide the side members M, M from the front wall l2, and lfi it indicate cuts (in line with said score lines) which sever said side members from the bottom wall I l. The transverse score line 12 dividing the front, wall l2 from the bottom wall H is extended laterally across the side members M, it beyond the score lines i5 as indicated at l2 [2 to define the bottom limits of side walls l6, I6. I6 36 indicate the top edges of the side walls It. They are cut at angle to the top edge l2 of the end wall I being inclined away from prolongations. of the line of said edge, as clearlyshown in Figure 1.
l'l, ll indicate parts of the side members l4, M of the blank beyond the score lines I2 lZ Said parts ll, ll are free of the blank along the cuts it lb Each of said parts is provided with spaced transverse lines adapting it to be folded upon itself to form a wedge-like tubular member adapted to occupy one-half of the bottom ll of the box and to present a supplemental inner bot tom wall which inclines upwardly from the front towards the rear wall of the box. Il ll indicate score lines spaced half the width of the box bottom ll from the score lines I2 l2 which de fine the bottom edges of the side walls l6, l6. l8, l3 indicate score lines spaced from and diverging from the score lines H ll towards the outer edges of the parts ll, ll. l9, l9 indicate score lines extending parallel to and spaced from the score lines i8, i8, distances equal to the spaces between the score lines H and I2 20, indi eate score lines disposed at the same angles to the score lines l9 as the score lines 8 to the'score lines ll leaving narrow flap extensions 2|, 2i beyond the score lines 20. The edges of the parts i'l beyond the score lines I 8 are cut at right angles to said score lines l8, I8.
Beyond the rear wall l3 the blank is provided with a display extension 22 defined by a score line 22 At the sides of the end wall l3 are narrow fiaps 23, 23 and 24, 24 defined by score lines 25, 25 and separated from each otherby cuts 26, 26.
To assemble the box, one of the parts H of the side members Id of the blank is folded upon itself along the score lines 20, l9, l8 and I! as shown in Figure 4, and along the score line l2 to form a hollow, wedge-like member, as shown at the left in Figure 5, with one side engaged against the proximate side wall It of the box, with its bottom in the plane of the bottom edge of said side wall and its top presenting an inclined inner bottom wall section. The other part H is folded in like manner with respect to its proximate side wall I 6 and then each side wall is swung upon the score line to bring the two supplemental wedge-like bottom members 2'1, 2?, to position on the bottom wall ll as shown in Figure 6.
The rear wall i3 is now swung upright with reference to the bottom wall 1 l on the score line 13*. In this operation the flaps 24 near the bottom of the rear wall 13 are folded in and engaged within the open ends of the hollow wedge members 27, thus acting to hold said members in open relation; and the flaps 23 are folded against the up- Lil right margins of the side walls I 6, .all as shown in Figure 3. Any suitable means, preferably an adhesive, as glue, may be used for attaching the flaps 23 to the inside margins of the side walls 5, H5.
The box is now ready for packing, and after packing the display extension 22 may be folded down about the score line 23 upon the contents of the box.
It will be noted that by reason of the angle at which the top edges l6 of the side walls I6 are disposed to the top edge l2 of the front wall I2, said edges when the box is set up incline upwardly and rearwardly. It will be further noted that because of the angles at which the score lines l8, I9 and 20 are disposed to the score lines il and I2 of the blank, the top faces of the supplemental bottom members 21, 27 incline upwardly and rearwardly at an angle substantially parallel to the top edges i l6 of the side walls of the box.
Obviously the blanks to form the box may be shipped fiat, and may be easily and quickly manipulated to set up the box as required by the packer.
When the goods are packed in the box, the display flap 22 may be folded down on top of them in the usual manner, wax paper or other covering being used to cover that part of the contents not covered by said flap. The box may then be packed in a slip-cover as usual for shipment,a filler being provided to compensate for the inclined top edges of the box.
The hollow wedge members 21 substantially filling as they do the bottom of the box with their proximate edges engaged against each other, and their outer edges engaged against the upright side walls l6, l6 of the box, provide a very rigid construction. This not only presents a ,box comparatively rigid against lateral compression at the bottom, but also aninner bottom which is not easily distorted by the weight of the contents or otherwise. The proximate edge parts of the tubular wedge-shaped members together present an eflicient strut for supporting the inclined inner bottom wall along its longitudinal median line.
I claim as my invention:
1. A display box comprisingfront, bottom and rear walls hinged together in end-to-end relation, said rear -wall being of greater depth than said front Wall, side Walls hinged to the lateral edges of said front wall and having edges at an angle to the edge of said front wall, blank parts hinged to the bottom of said side walls but otherwise free,
said blank arts being cut and scored to fold upon themselves to form tubular wedge members adapted to lie upon the bottom wall to provide an upwardly and rearwardly inclined inner wall, and said rear wall having upper and lower lateral flaps, said lower flaps being adapted for engagement within the open rear ends of said tubular wedge members when the box is set up.
2. A display box made from a blank cut and scored to provide front, bottom and rear walls,
and a display member extending in end-to-end relation, said end wall being of greater depth than said front wall, side walls at the lateral edges of said front wall with their free edges at an angle to the free edge of said front wall, said blank including parts hinged to the bottoms of said side walls but otherwise free, said parts being cut and scored to fold upon themselves to form tubular wedge members adapted to lie upon the bottom wall to provide an upwardly and rearwardly inclined inner wall, and top and bottom flaps at the lateral edges of said rear wall, said bottom flap being adapted for engagement within the open rear ends of said tubular wedge members when the blank is set up into box form.
3. A box made from a blank cut and scored to form front, bottom, side and rear walls, said blank including parts out and scored to be folded upon themselves to provide tubular members adapted to lie upon the bottom of the box, said .tubular members having sides abutting the sidewalls of the box and sides abutting each other intermediate said side walls of the box and presenting an inner supplemental bottom wall.
4. A box made from a blank cut and scored to form front, bottom, side and rear walls, said blank including parts out and scored to be folded upon themselves to provide tubular wedge-shaped members adapted to lie upon the bottom of the box, said tubular members having sides abutting the side walls of the box and sides abutting each other intermediate said side walls of the box and presenting an inner supplemental bottom wall.
5. A box made from a blank cut and scored to form front, bottom, side and rear walls, said blank including parts out and scored to be folded upon themselves to provide tubular members of like width and cross section to lie upon the box bottom and present an inner supplemental bottom wall, said tubular members having sides abutting the side walls of the box and proximate sides abutting together and extending substantially the length of the box bottom.
