UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE IRA C. KELLER, OF WINNETKA, ILLINOI S, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO CONTAINER CORPORATION OF AMERICA, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE SHIPPING AND DISPLAY BOX Application filed May 10,
My'invention relates generally to boxes suitable for packing, shipping and display purposes, and has to do particularly with cardboard, orthe like, boxes'of this character.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a box embodying a simple and highly efficient means for fastening two or more of its walls together and which is of a character permitting the walls to be readily and quickly separated without cutting or otherwise injuring the walls or other box parts, whereby the'box may well be used for display purposes after it has served its shipping purposes.
Another object is to provide means for detachably fastening two of the box walls together, including an extension on one wall which is perforated to divide the same into two parts, one of which is adapted to be fastened to the other of the box walls to be attached, the perforations permitting the attached and unattached extension portions to be readily separated without injuring the same.
A further object is to provide for ready access to the perforated wall surface when the wall is in its closed position to, permit of easy separation of the attached and unattached portions thereof. To this. end, I slit the wall in such a manner that an object may be inserted in the'slit and moved laterally along the perforated surface to separate the parts as above stated.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent as this description progresses and by reference to the drawings, wherein";
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of box embodying my invention and showing the top wall fastened in its box-closing position;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box shown in Fig. 1 with the top wall open and adjusted to a display position;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken lengthwise through the box substantially on line Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken crosswise of the box substantially on line Ir-4 of Fig. 3

which the boxshown in the previous figures is formed ;"and
Fig. 6 is a plan view of a portion of a inodified form of blank embodying my inven- With particular reference to the form of box shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, the box is, formed from a single blank of cardboard, or other suitable material, cut and scored in the manner indicated in Fig. 5. More specifically, this blank comprises a bottom portion 10 having endwalls 11 and 12, front wall 13 and rear wall 14 connected thereto along the fold lines 11', 12', 13 and 14, respectively. The front and rear walls 13 and 14 are each provided with end flaps 15 and 16 foldable along, the crease lines 15' and 16.
I also provide a top covering section 17 connected to the rear box wall 14: along a fold line 17 This top section 17 has end wall flaps 18 and 19 connected thereto along the fold lines 18 and 19", and it also is provided with a front fastening flap 20 connected along the fold line 20. The top section 17 and its end flaps 18 and 19 are scored along the central fold lines 21 and 22 at the opposite ends and the former is out along the line 23 between the fold lines 21 and 22 for a purpose which will be described hereinafter.
The principal feature of my invention is the provision of means for securely fastening the top wall to the front wall 13, at the same time, providing for ready and quick detachment of the front end of such wall to permit it to be swung to an open position such as that indicated in Fig. 2; and I accomplish this in such a manner that the box walls are in no way injured, and so that after the box is opened, the box presents a neat appearance and it may be readily used for display purposes. It will be obvious that my invention maybe employed for detachably fastening any two of the box walls together and I, therefore, do not intend to be limited to the specific form and arrangement illustrated.
In carrying out the foregoing feature, the front flap 20 is perforated along the aligned surfaces 24; and 25, and these perforated suralong the perforated lines toward the ends of the flap. In fastening the top wall I apply glue, or other suitable adhesive substance, to the flap section and/or the adjacent portion of the inner surface of the box front wall 13 which the flap 20 engages in its box closing position. In this manner, the flap portion 2O only is securely fastened to the inner surface of the box front wall when the box blank is set up or partially set up and the perforations 24 and 25 (see Fig. 2) are preferably disposed on substantially the same level as the upper edge of the front wall 13 whereby after the box has been opened the severed edge of the adhering section 20 will be substantially coincidental.
with the edge of the front wall portion 13 so that the adhering section will be practically hidden from view so as not to detract from the appearance of the display. In the form of box shown, the first step in setting up the blank may be the fastening of the top wall 17 as above described. The blank may be shipped to the packer in this condition. However, if desired, this operation may take place after the box has been set up and packed. There are many Well known forms of boxes where this latter method would" be more desirable.-
When it is desired to open the packed box and move the top wall 17 to an open-display position, ones finger or any suitable instrument may be inserted in the cut 26 (see Figs. 1 and 2) and moved laterally along the perforations 24 and 25 to separate the attached and unattached flap sections, as will be well understood. The ,flap sections 20 and20 may thus clearly'be separated along a line surface with the flap section 20 remaining attached to the box front wall (Fig. 2). The upper edge of the box front Wall 13 is cut and shaped at 27 similarly to the cut 26, and this edge surface 27 is aligned with the cut 26, as shown, to strengthen the front wall surface at that point and to present a neat appearance at the front of the'box as-well as to protect the perforated surfaces against accidental separation. i
The cut 23 in the cover 17 together with thefold lines 21 and 22 permit the cover, when opened, to be folded to a display position such as shown in Fig. 2. The cover may I be held in this position by the flap portion tion 20 may also frictionally engage the ad:
20 extending downwardly along the rear wall 14 of the box behind the articles therein. If desired, the end edges of the flap porj acent box end wall surfaces to hold the cover in the position just described.
In Figjl, I have shown byway of illustration, the perforated lines 24 and 25 in the flap 20 so positioned that they extend along the upper edge of the front wall 13 when the top wall is fastened thereto. However, it is to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to this particular arrangement, because it is obvious that these perforated lines may be lowered so as to extend along the box front wall at a point beneath its upper edge without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
In Fig. 6,'I have shown a modified form of blank which is similar to that shown in Fig. 5 except that a different form of fastening flap 28 is employed. This form of flap includes a portion connected to the top wall 17 a along the fold line 17 and having spaced tongues or extensions 28 connected thereto along perforated lines or oints 29. The flap portion 28 is cut away between the ends of the flap extensions as at30, and the inner edge 30 of this cut-out portion is shaped sizi milarly to the cut 26 of the form shown in 1g. a. stance, is applied to the flap extensions or tongues 28 sothat they may be securely fastened to theinner surface of the front wall of the box to hold the top wall in its closed position. The cover may be readily broken open without injuring the same by separating the'portion 28 from the extensions 28 along the perforated lines 29. The opening '30 with its inward curved edge 30" permits tion as defined by the claims which followiv I claim: I
1. In a paper carton, a plurality of side walls, a cover supported by one of said side walls, a fastening flap along the unsupported edge of said cover, said flap having a cutout in its mid-portion, said flap on the opposite sides of said cut-out being adapted for attachment to the inner surface of another of said side walls, said latter side wall having an extension projecting from its upper edge and adapted to cover said cut-out when the cover is closed, leaving a free space between said latter extension and flap for the inser- The glue, or other adhesive subtion of an object to break the fastening connection between said flap and the side wall to which it is attached.
2.. A box comprising front, rear and bottom walls and a top hingedly carried by the rear wall, the top including a flap having a portion adhesively secured directly to the inner surface of the front wall, said flap having a line of perforations therein throughout its length and substantially coincident with the free edge of said front wall, whereby the box is readily opened by severance along the perforated line and the flap portion secured to the front wall is substantially hidden by a said wall and the exterior of the box will not be rendered unsightly by the severance of the flap portion.
3. A display box in the form of a collapsible tube adapted to assume a rectangular form, said box comprising top, bottom, front and rear walls and flaps associated with said walls adapted to close the tubular ends of said box, said front wall being formed by upper and lower portions carried, respectively, upon said top and bottom walls, the lower front wall portion being of less height than the rear wall, the upper front wall portion being formed in two sections separated by a perforated line, one of said sections being adhesively attached to the inner face of the lower front wall portion and the other of said sections being of a width sufiicient to form, together with the lower front wall portion, a
front wall substantially equal in height to the rear wall, and said perforated line being substantially coincident with the upper edge of the lower front wall portion so that when said perforated line is severed to open the box the adhesively attached section will be substantially hidden behind the lower front wall portion.
4:. In a cardboard, or other similar box, rear, end and front walls, a cover connected to said rear wall, and a flap carried by said cover and adapted to extend along said front wall when said cover is closed, said flat having a slotted surface at its central part and being perforated to its ends from said slotted part, the portion of said flap beyond. the perforations and slot being adapted for at tachment to the inside of the front wall, said front wall having an extension projecting from its upper edge and adapted to substantially protect the slotted surface when the cover is closed, and said slot and perforations permitting scparationof the attached and unattached portions of said flap without mar ring said front wall or cover.
5. In a display box, a plurality of walls, one of which is hingedly carried by another of said walls, the hingedly carried wall being provided with an extension along sub stantially its entire length, a slotted opening in said extension, a weakened line detachably connecting said extensionto said hinged:
ly carried wall and extending outwardly to the edges of said extension from-opposite sides of said opening, and means for securing said extension directly to the inner surface of still another of said walls, whereby said detachable connection can be readily broken by the insertion of an object through said opening and the subsequent movement of the same laterally along said connection.
In testimony whereof, I have subscribed my name.
