283,272. Frame, W. J., and British Vacuum Cleaner & Engineering Co., Ltd. Oct. 6, 1926. Vacuum cleaning-apparatus. - In a hand operated vacuum cleaner the fan of which is driven by friction from the floor wheels, the suction floor nozzle is connected by one or more ducts to the fan casing, the discharge of dust laden air from which is delivered to an air filter. The fan spindle n is driven frictionally by driving wheels k which are rocked into contact by links l pivoting on lugs m, when the cleaner is pushed forward, and are rocked back out of driving contact when the cleaner is drawn back along the floor. A stop m<1> prevents the driving wheels from lagging behind on the backward pull. A rotary brush e is driven by mounting journals g which are spring pressed so that a roller f on the brush shaft contacts with and is driven by the periphery of ground driven wheels i. The roller i may be adjustable vertically and the links l may also be adjustable. Alternatively the wheels k may be pressed into permanent contact with the fan spindle which therefore is provided with a free wheel device.
