Abstract
283,010. Smith, W. S., and Shuter, A. D. Feb. 26, 1927. Tension indicators for ropes &c.-The riding or measuring sheave over which is passed a submarine cable which is being laid, picked up, or held, is mounted so that its weight does not influence the action of the dynamometer, whilst the loading means of the dynamometer is not substantially affected by gravity. The pedestal 4 carries a pivot 3 for a lever 2 at one end of which is pivoted the sheave 1. whilst the other carries a counterweight 5 thus forming a balanced system. The end of the lever engages with a plunger 6 in a cylinder 7 containing fluid the pressure of which, and hence the tension on the rope, is indicated by a gauge 9. In a modifica.tion Fig. 3, the sheave is carried on a lever 10 the pivot 11 of which is supported vertically above the centre of gravity of the sheave. The lower end of the lever engages a ram 12 in a cylinder 13 containing fluid operating a gauge 14. In order to control the tension on the cable, the cylinder 13 communicates through a cock 20 and pipe 15 with a cylinder 16 of smaller bore the plunger 17 of which is suitably connected to the clutch or brake controlling the paying-out or picking-up gear of the cable. The tension of the loading spring 18 may be adjusted by a screw 19.
