Abstract
316,519. Heinkel, E. July 28, 1928, [Convention date]. Dynamometers. - A device for testing an aircraft - launching apparatus of the type in which a carriage is accelerated along a track by a cable 1, is connected to the launching- carriage or to its accelerating means and is arranged to absorb and to measure the energy expended thereby and may be so adjusted as to apply the same loads that would be involved in the launching of an actual aircraft. In one device a cable 1, Fig. 2, attached to the launching- carriage or its accelerating means is wound upon a drum 2, of which the successive diameters are proportioned according to the energy to be absorbed at the varying stages of the launching- operation. Coupled to the drum 2 is a fluid brake 3 having a torque-indicating device consisting of a pointer 6 deflected over a scale 7 against the resistance of a spring 5; alternatively the energy absorbed can be measured by the rise in temperature of the braking fluid. The end of the cable 1 is arranged so as automatically to disconnect from the drum 2 when fully unwound and is caught by a fork 10 formed at one end of a pivoted spring- loaded arm 12. The arm 12 is provided with a drag pointer 13 for indicating on a scale 14 the kinetic energy stored in the cable 1 at release. The brake device may be connected to the drum by a one-way clutch in which case a friction brake operated by the unwinding of the cable is employed to bring the drum to rest.
