Abstract

8357. Blackburn, A. A., Brown, A. G., Brecknell, H., Munro, E. M., and Rogers, H. I. April 12. Testing chains.-The strength of chains is tested by means of a spring balance and windlass, a system of levers and weights, or a fluid-pressure ram and pressure gauge. The apparatus is mounted on a steel frame a, which is provided with wheels k, handles m, and supporting-legs l. In the first arrangement, Fig. 2, the spring balance c engages a pin b on the frame, and rests, when not in use, on a cross-bar n. The chain d is attached to the spring balance and to a windlass e, which is rotated by means of a worm wheel f, worm g, and handle i. In the second arrangement, Fig. 5, the action of the weights x is transmitted to the chain by means of a lever w pivoted at w<1>, lever v<3> pivoted at v<5> and connected to the lever w by a pin-and-slot device, link v<4>, lever v pivoted at v<2>, link v<1>, and L-shaped lever p. The lever p is forked to form two bearings for a winding-axle q<1>, to which one end of the chain d is attached, the other end being attached to a fixed hook o. Before placing any weights x on the hanger x<1>, the chain is tightened by oscillating a handle u, which carries a pawl acting on a ratchet-wheel fixed to the shaft q<1>, until a stop z on the lever w meets the frame. A second ratchetwheel on the shaft q<1> is acted on by a pawl to prevent the return of the shaft. The levers are pivoted on knife-edge bearings, and their weights are such as to balance the friction of the moving parts. In the third arrangement, the chain is attached at one end to a winding-axle provided with a handle and ratchet retaining-device, and at the other end to a plunger of small diameter passing through one end of a fluid-pressure cylinder. The plunger has also a part of large diameter, which passes through the other end of the cylinder. A hand pump, a tank for the fluid, and an exhaust valve are provided. The tension of the chain may be indicated directly by the pressure gauge, which is connected to the hydraulic cylinder.
