Abstract

217,524. Clarke, D. Jan. 24, 1924. Jib cranes.-A safety device for preventing falling of the jib comprises brakes for the luffing drum 2 applied by the weight of the jib either automatically when the jib reaches its lowest working position or by hand in any position of the jib. As shown the jib is normally held in any working position by pawl and ratchet mechanism on the luffing drum. The safety device comprises two band-brakes 3 on the flanges of the luffing drum, operated from the jib through levers and links 4, 9, 6, 14, 13. The link 13 is pivoted on a block 15 moving on a guide in the jib and cushioned by springs 16. The band-brake is formed in two portions with an adjustable spring connection 22. The links 9 or 14 are adjustable for varying the position at which the jib applies the brakes. The hand control comprises a brake strap 25 for preventing the link 13 turning on its pivot 10, so that when the brake 25 is applied, any downward movement of the jib applies the brakes on the luffing drum. The brake strap 25 is applied by relative movement between the jib and a lever 26 pivoted thereon at 27. Such relative movement takes place when a lever 29 is depressed by the operator, or is prevented by means of a rack 36 from rising, whilst the jib is falling. In a modification, the braking device for the luffing drum consists of a friction cone at each end of the drum moved laterally by the luffing rope in unwinding from the drum.
