Abstract

281,420. Bruce, W. J. W. Sept. 18, 1926. Safety-valves. - Apparatus for effecting the silent blow-off of steam generators of ships &c. of the kind comprising a main relief valve controlled by a spring- loaded pilot valve and provided with an outlet condenser has the relief valve disposed at a point relatively near the stoke hold floor and provided with an alarm actuated by the pilot valve to indicate when the device is in operation. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the steam connection for the relief valve 1 is made to the main steam conduit 14 and is controlled by a valve 16. The relief valve is arranged in proximity to the condenser which is of the ejector type and has valve, controlled inlet and outlet connections to the outside of the ship disposed horizontally in the direction of travel. The relief valve 20 is opened against conduit pressure by fluid pressure admitted behind a piston through a pilot valve 24 loaded by a spring 29. The pilot valve spindle passes to the outside of the casing and is coupled to a hand actuating lever 31 which also carries an adjustable abutment adapted to cause two spring arms 32 to make contact and sound an electric alarm. The steam space above the pilot valve is connected by a pipe to a whistle.
